Successful Interviews with VoIP | GK Computer Consulting Services

Spring is almost here, and you know what that means: many companies and employees are looking for a fresh start. Chances are high that if your company is going to experience employee turnover, it will happen in Q2. This means that you will probably be conducting interviews, and one of the most convenient and popular ways of conducting an interview is via VoIP software ? Skype, Microsoft LYNC, etc. Do you plan to conduct an interview using VoIP?

Let?s face it, there are very few people out there who love conducting interviews. The ones that do, are journalists, the rest of us see it as a means to the end. But that doesn?t mean that you should put interviews on the back burner. Remember, the purpose of the interview is to find an employee that meets your needs and is a good fit for your business. Many of us have watched or conducted interviews over VoIP, and have walked away unimpressed, or unsure of the results. Here are some tips to ensure you get the most out of VoIP while interviewing.

Remember the Rules
Many of us have another identity or personality when we are online, it?s common to see people who are usually quiet and reserved in real life become very vocal when placed in front of a computer. This also happens when people conduct interviews online, another personality often comes out during the interview. Remember: even though you are conducting an interview over VoIP, it is still an interview, and as such, you need to follow the same rules and guidelines you would when conducting a face-to-face interview. One of the biggest things interviewers forget when they conduct interviews via VoIP is that you are a representative of your company and its brand, the interviewee will form their own opinion based on what you say and how you act. Adopt your face-to-face interview persona, not the online persona.

Lights, Camera, Office?
When conducting the interview it is best to pick a well-lit spot, with minimal to no distractions. Your office may be the one with Nirvana posters on the wall ? which is cool ? but they?re probably not the best thing to have as your background during the interview. The best spot to conduct face-to-face interviews is in a conference room, so why not conduct the online interview there? If you don?t have a conference room, pick a quiet spot in the office. Wherever you settle, be sure you are comfortable there, as chances are you will be conducting more than one interview.

When you have found a good spot, be sure to turn off your cellphone, or at least put it on silent. Also be sure to turn the various sound alerts on your computer off. Nothing is more annoying to interviewees than being interrupted mid-sentence by a telephone call, or the ubiquitous IM alert.

Test the Tech
Before you conduct the interview, ensure you are familiar with the program you are using. You don?t want to accidentally mute the interviewee, or even worse, hang up on them. It is a good idea to set up in the place you are going to be conducting the interview, and check that the internet connection is stable, or if you are using WiFi, that the signal is strong. Conduct a test call with a colleague or another person to ensure that your webcam is working correctly, and you can hear the other person. It is best to do this a few days in advance, so you can iron out any glitches or problems with lots of time to spare.

If a technological mishap occurs during the interview, or you lose your connection, don?t give up and walk away, simply call the interviewee back, apologize and carry on. Better still, establish at the outset that if there is a problem, you will definitely call back. This will ensure that the interviewee isn?t calling you when you are calling them.

The Interview
Remember that you are using technology for the interview, and this technology has many useful features, the most pertinent being the ability to record. Being able to play the interview back later if you feel you have missed something, or want to know other employees? opinions, is an excellent perk to using VoIP. Be sure to let the interviewee know that their interview will be recorded, as it could be illegal to record the person without their consent.

One common oversight by both the interviewer and interviewee is time. It may happen that you need to conduct an interview with someone in another timezone. It?s important to be aware of the time difference and ensure that both parties are on the same page. Also, if you?re in an area that has Daylight Savings Time, be aware that some places don?t observe it, and adjust accordingly. If you know the interviewee is in another timezone, clearly state when you are setting up the interview time, if you mean your time or the interviewee?s time.

Finally, when conducting the interview: be aware of where you are looking. Most programs will have the other person in a large image with you in a smaller image. Look at the image of the person when they are speaking, and at the camera when you are speaking. This is the best way to replicate eye-contact in a face-to-face interview.

When you remain professional and can execute a good interview using VoIP software, you can be sure that the interviewee will be impressed and will want to join your company. Good luck! If you would like to know more about using VoIP for interviews, or other business operations give us a call ? we are more than happy to hear from you.

Christopher Hennessy: Translating Hate

From Republican presidential candidates to radio “entertainers” to rap stars, the discourse this country churns out is a buffet of hateful language. It seems no group gets out unscathed. And we blithely accept it. How is that working out for you?

About a week ago I came across a trending topic on Twitter that was so hate-filled I couldn’t just let it pass this time. The topic had started out as messages people were tweeting to their future children — tweets as time capsules (“#ToMyUnbornChild”). Of course, something positive quickly mutated, for some, into something horrific. (Why are we so good at that?) In a span of 24 hours, about a hundred tweets took the “#ToMyUnbornChild” message and turned into anti-gay vitriol so heinous I couldn’t stomach it. Let me be clear what I’m talking about by giving an example:

“#ToMyUnbornChild if you so much as think about being a homosexual I’ll put a bullet in your damn skull.”

People were messaging their future children dire warnings: “Grow up gay and I’ll kill you.” Not a message of hope or love, but of murderous rage against their own (albeit imaginary) children. Here’s the website where you can view them all in their unmitigated venom. And here’s a Huffington Post article that notes the 20 most disturbing, accrording to one editor. Here you have would-be parents sending a message to a community of young people that have experienced a shockingly high number of suicides in recent years. These young people feel so lost they’ve taken their lives rather than face another day at school, another day at home, another day, period. Do we really believe these kids don’t absorb the hate they hear? Do we really believe it doesn’t have a role in their misery, is part of what leads them down such a dark path? Knowing many of them experience horrific bullying on a daily basis, for how long are we going to kid ourselves into believing messages like these don’t hurt, too?

I became determined to take back these words of hate. I had seen it done before. A website called Godlovespoetry.com had given me a great example. Their mission: “Challenging the Westboro Baptist Church one blackout poem at a time.” A blackout poem is a poem that takes an original text and blacks out certain words to create a new text, much like a sculptor might chip away the stone they don’t need or want. In the case of Godlovespoetry.com, the artists take the hateful messages, signs, and press releases from the infamous Westboro Chruch (their most famous is “God Hates Fags”) and turn the haters’ language against them, creating messages of affirmation.

It’s what I had in mind when I opened up a Word document and began cutting and pasting words (i.e., kill, rope, etc.) from the tweets to create poems. Unlike a blackout poem, however, I surrounded these words of hate with language of beauty and sound and texture and mystery and song. I titled the poems that resulted with the Twitter identity of the person whose tweet I used. This was my way of taking back the language. A few examples are below.

I want to suggest that this can be a powerful mode of resistance. Write your own blackouts or collages, or find new ways of “taking back” the language of hate. And post them on Twitter, Facebook, blogs, subway cars, anywhere, with the hashtag “#Translatinghate.” And there must be more examples of sites like Godlovespoetry.com out there! Post them in the comments.

Here are the poems I discovered while working with the “#ToMyUnbornChild” tweets.

@kp225br

What you bet:
the cut rope
you now knot—
the sign
you hang
on the door–

like a paisley tie,
a flag for the cause
of uninterrupted
being, of un-
disturbed Love.

@_SNRS

You swear I can take a taste.
That it’s finally our turn at night.

The bloodless preparation. Face
it, the thunderclap always strikes
as your lifting fork to mouth.
Let the spoon and knife
clatter as we kill
the last bottle and feast
on the coming storm.
Verb: to rage
or complain
with violence
or fury. As in, to storm
the jail so that you who
hate may be loved.

@Cant_C_Me

The scare of erasure.
The straight lick of razor.

The puff-shaped drums.
A sugar gums the guns.

Your sleeping head in my lap.
The damp of cold cream all that’s left.

@HeartbreakHicks

If you’re a boy every time I see you,
I’ll disown this crown of claims.

If you’re a girl every time I see you,
I’ll disclaim this candle of balm.

If you’re you every time I see you,
I’ll let go this brink of blame.

@KidCodie_

You so much rose hips
You so much pollen
The dammed honey
The skull of a hive
Each comb a bullet
Hole, each you home.

Intel Core i7-3930K

When advising people on buying most performance-oriented components, we usually recommend taking a single step back from the top of the line: There?s frequently a bigger difference in price than in capability between the bleeding edge and the next best. That?s unquestionably the case with the Intel Core i7-3930K, the second most powerful CPU in Intel?s Sandy Bridge?Extreme line. No, it doesn?t have all the bells and whistles and shoot-the-moon speed characteristics of the line?s flagship model, the Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition. But coming in at almost half the price ($583 list versus $999 list), it will prove for all but the most hard-core die-hards to be The Chip You Want if you?re committed to Intel?s knock-’em-dead X79 Express platform.

Even on paper, the differences between the two CPUs look ridiculously slight. The Core i7-3930K has 12MB of cache to the faster chip?s 15MB, and a clock rate of 3.2GHz instead of 3.3GHz that can rise to a maximum of 3.8GHz instead of 3.9GHz when Turbo Boost is enabled. But that?s about it. Both chips use Intel?s 32nm production process, both have six CPU cores that can manage up to 12 processing threads at a time thanks to Hyper-Threading, and both have TDPs of 130 watts. This chip, like the Core i7-3960X, requires an X79 Express motherboard with an LGA2011 socket; a discrete video card, as the chip sports no integrated graphics system (despite its use of the Sandy Bridge microarchitecture, which provided one on the Core i7-2600K and Core i5-2500K); and a separate cooler, as Intel does not bundle one with any CPU in this line.

Most enthusiasts will consider these small prices to pay?and paying them will be a pleasure given how much you save over the Core i7-3960X for what amounts to nearly equivalent performance. We saw with the non-Extreme Sandy Bridge Core i5-2500K last generation that you can still draw remarkable performance from a next-in-line chip, and our benchmark tests show that Intel has continued that welcome tradition here.

As evaluated on a test system using an Asus P9X79 Deluxe motherboard, the Core i7-3930K applied a dozen filters and effects to an image in Adobe Photoshop CS5 in 2 minutes 53 seconds, as opposed to the Core i7-3960X?s 2 minutes 48 seconds. Video conversion using the open-source program Handbrake took 1 minute 8 seconds, whereas on the Core i7-3960X it was only two seconds faster. In the CineBench R11.5 rendering task, the slower chip?s scores (10.17 for multiple cores, 1.53 for a single core) were just a hair behind those of the faster one (10.48 and 1.57, respectively). The Core i7-3930K?s results on the Futuremark 3DMark 11 physics test (10,958 and a frame rate of 34.78 frames per second, or fps) were barely behind those of the Core i7-3960X (11,509 and 36.54fps). On the full-system Futuremark PCMark 7 benchmark, the scores followed exactly the same pattern: The overall score was 3,643 versus 3,594, with the individual tests similarly matched.

Our tests calibrated for more component-level performance, AIDA64, SiSoftware Sandra 2012, and Geekbench 2.2, proved just as conclusive: There is almost no performance differential between the Core i7-3930K and the Core i7-3960X that most users will find significant enough to be worth the extra $416 or so it will cost to get them. You should note, however, that you also won?t save a significant amount on energy usage: In our measurements conducted with an Extech Datalogger, the Core i7-3930K?s 122.5-watt draw at idle and 233.7-watt draw under full load was not far removed from Core i7-3960X?s respective 124.1-watt and 243.2-watt draws. But if you?re building a system using either of these CPUs (and the likely video cards and other hardware they?ll require), your energy bill is probably not the first thing on your mind.

We?re hard pressed to come up with too many negatives about the Intel Core i7-3930K: It?s a gorgeously balanced CPU that will net you a super-fast computer without sending you on a super-fast trip to the poorhouse, too, and that makes it easily worth an Editors? Choice award in our book. Those who simply cannot settle for anything less than the maximum allowable CPU speed will, of course, prefer the Core i7-3960X, and find those few additional drops of performance worth the money. But everyone else is probably better off with the Core i7-3930K: Whether or not you see fit to overclock it (and if you do, the unlocked multiplier guarantees that you won?t have any trouble pushing it past the Core i7-3960X?s base speed), it?s an amazing processor at an amazing price.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth: Engaged?!?

Is there something you would like to tell us, Miley Cyrus?

Yesterday, the young singer/actress Tweeted a photo of her hand in support of a nail foundation – but talk surrounding the image had a lot more to do with diamonds than polish. How come? See for yourself:

Miley Twit Pic

Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have been going strong for awhile, of course, with an insider recently telling OK! Weekly:

“They’re still keeping it a big secret, but they’re seriously talking marriage. Liam is crazy about her! Miley wants the whole nine yards as far as a big wedding goes.”

And she’d be smart to lock Liam down ASAP. With The Hunger Games blowing up at the box office, he’ll only become a bigger and bigger draw to other women out there.

No word yet from anyone in either Miley or Liam’s camp confirming or denying this rumor.

West dilutes UN council text on Syria peace bid

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – In an effort to secure Russian support, Western powers on the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday diluted a draft statement backing U.N.-Arab League Syrian envoy Kofi Annan‘s drive to end violence that has brought the country to the brink of civil war.

The 15-nation panel held two rounds of negotiations on Tuesday on a Western-drafted statement that would express “full support” for Annan’s peace efforts while threatening Damascus with “further steps” if it failed to comply with the council’s demands “in a timely manner,” council diplomats told Reuters.

A previous version of the statement had threatened Syria with new U.N. measures it Damascus failed to comply within seven days, which diplomats said Russia considered to be an ultimatum. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow could support a statement provided it contained no ultimatums.

The Western push for a “presidential statement” from the council backing Annan’s mission comes after Russia and China twice vetoed resolutions condemning Syria’s yearlong assault on demonstrators opposed to President Bashar al-Assad. The United Nations says over 8,000 civilians have been killed in the crackdown.

Western envoys said securing Russian backing for the U.N. statement would be a diplomatic blow for Moscow’s ally Assad.

After a two-hour closed-door negotiating session, Russian U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin suggested to reporters that Moscow was prepared to back the Western-drafted statement.

“Some need instructions,” he said when asked why the council had not approved the statement. “We were ready to go.”

But a senior Western diplomat challenged Churkin’s remarks, saying it was the Russian envoy who pushed for a delay in the adoption of the statement. “He (Churkin) decided in the end that he wanted to wait until tomorrow morning,” the diplomat said.

If no one raises any objections by Wednesday morning, the statement will be automatically adopted without a vote under a process at the United Nations known as a “silence procedure.”

Also up for automatic approval on Wednesday morning is a draft of informal remarks to the press that Syria’s close ally Russia asked the council to approve. Those remarks would have the council condemn bomb attacks last weekend in the cities of Damascus and Aleppo.

RUSSIA HARDENS POSITION?

Indian Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri expressed optimism that the statement would be approved by the council. “Some people want to consult their capitals, but it will work, that’s the important thing,” Puri told reporters.

Other diplomats said privately that Moscow or Beijing might tell their delegations to propose further changes to the statement.

If the statement is approved, it would be a further sign that Moscow, which has been Assad’s staunchest supporter since he began cracking down on anti-government protesters a year ago, is toughening its position on the Syrian conflict.

Earlier on Tuesday, Lavrov said Syria’s leadership had made “very many mistakes.”

The core of the draft statement is Annan’s six-point peace proposal, which calls for a cease-fire, political dialogue between the government and opposition, and full access for humanitarian agencies. As Lavrov had demanded, the statement includes Annan’s proposal verbatim.

Western diplomats said privately that their push for a statement backing Annan highlighted their determination to break the impasse on the Security Council that has prevented it from taking any forceful action against Syria since Assad began cracking down on demonstrators.

Annan, a former U.N. secretary-general, on Friday urged the Security Council to overcome its deadlock and unify in support of his efforts to end the violence.

Unlike resolutions, which are legally binding and need nine votes in favor and no vetoes from the five permanent council members to pass, statements are generally non-binding but require unanimous support from the council.

The latest draft presidential statement is separate from a U.S.-drafted resolution calling on Syria to allow access to humanitarian aid workers in the country.

The last time the council passed a presidential statement on Syria was August 2011, although council members reached a rare unanimous agreement on informal remarks to the press on March 1 to rebuke Damascus for not allowing U.N. humanitarian aid chief Valerie Amos into the country.

Shortly after the council approved those remarks to the press, Amos was allowed to visit Damascus.

Billig SEO- Link Popularity

We all know that seo is significant for getting more online visibility. It is hard to imagine do-it-yourself search engine optimization actually working. It is even more difficult to believe that it can be done utilizing mostly free tools. Although then that is one of the really amazing elements about the Internet ? you will discover numerous dissimilar ways of getting top ranking for your keywords and phrases. Prior to delving into the tactics that can be used for search engine optimization, it is useful to appreciate what search engines really look for and the reason why most web sites find it so demanding to deliver. Many search engine articles you read these days, search engines are profiled as being quite much like some huge robot with no clear motives other than to kill and destroy. For instance people get shocked when some search engines change their algorithm.

Consider geographical phrases if they are important to your customer .Choose the two keyword phrases you think would be searched for the most. But also remember, the more competition there is for a keyword, the harder it is to achieve top rankings. Once you?ve selected your two best keyword phrases the next step shows you how to make some improvements to your home page. Web copy refers to all the words or text on your website. Because content is king in the world of search engines, your keyword phrases need to be placed strategically on your webpage to convince Google that your content is highly relevant to those keywords. The more prominent they are, the better.

Use your content management system to make these changes yourself, or perhaps ask your web developer to do it if you?re unsure how. Once you have fine-tuned your home page, consider adding new content, such as detailed descriptions of what you offer, FAQs and informative articles about your products and services. (If you don?t want to write these yourself, they can be located for free on the internet ? do a search for ?articles directory?). It?s also good to bear in mind that search engines can only read text, not pictures. Often web developers embed words in images to look better for website visitors or use Flash for animation, but this is a major impediment to search engines.

Submitting your article is the next step and an important one at that because this is where your article or articles are going to get picked up by website owners and publishers who are in constant need of fresh, quality information to feed their audiences hunger for information.

The idea here is to be adding links to other sites on your links page in exchange for the sites doing the same for you. You will of course be careful to concentrate your efforts on getting links from high page rank web sites. It is advisable to find sites that are related to your product or service. Protect Your Home From Flood Damage: Tips And Advice

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have partnered this month to highlight flood safety awareness.? This is a time for individuals, families, businesses and communities to understand their risk for flooding and take precautions to protect their families and homes in the event of flooding.

?

In honor of this awareness effort, Hillsborough County government, and its Hazard Mitigation Program, which promotes flood prevention and awareness efforts locally, is providing information to residents on how to protect themselves and their properties from flooding:

?

Fast Facts on Flooding in Hillsborough County:

  • Flooding is the most costly and repetitive natural disaster affecting Hillsborough County.

?

  • County flooding occurs not only along the coast, but along the rivers and in other inland areas, as well.

?

  • There are nearly 40,000 properties protected by flood insurance policies in Hillsborough County providing coverage of $8.2 billion.

?

  • More than $20 million in losses in Hillsborough County have been paid by the National Flood Insurance Program since 1978.

?

Property Flood Protection Tips

  • Learn if your property is in a high-risk flood zone.? You can look up your property by typing in your address on the County?s online flood map.

?

  • If you own property with a structure in the high-risk flood area, know that you will most likely need a flood insurance policy. Most mortgage lenders will require that you have a policy as part of your loan agreement.? Outside of high-risk areas, flood insurance is also available, usually at lower cost. While you?re not federally required to have flood insurance in a low-to-moderate risk area, it is still a good idea. Large floods often extend beyond the boundaries of high-risk areas and smaller floods occur outside high-risk areas as well. In fact, a quarter of all flood insurance claims come from low-to-moderate risk areas.? More information about flood insurance is available by going to www.floodsmart.gov, FEMA?s Flood Insurance website.

?

  • Do not place any debris ? lawn trash or otherwise ? in stormwater inlets, ditches or other waterways. Dumping into the drainage system can easily create blockages that result in flooding during a severe rain ? the house you flood may be your own!

?

  • If you have flooding problems on your property, consider diverting water from your property by regrading or by constructing an earthen berm. The construction of swales (a shallow ditch) and retention areas (small, shallow depressions) are other alternatives. These methods may require permits and should be discussed with design professionals in the County?s Development Services Department at 813-272-5920.

?

  • In extreme weather events, consider using sandbagging to protect your structures in conjunction with other materials to seal openings and cracks.

?

  • If roof drainage from your home is causing a problem, consider installing gutters to help direct the runoff away from the house.

?

  • Always check with the County?s Development Services Department?s Natural Resources Section at 813-272-5920 before making changes, such as grading, filling or construction on your property.

?

  • Learn more about floodproofing improvements you can make to your structures. The County Hazard Mitigation Program has copies of design publications that may assist in floodproofing and repairing your home or business. If you live in unincorporated Hillsborough County, you also can request a staff member visit your property for more information on retrofitting, remodeling and other topics.? Contact the Hazard Mitigation Program by calling 813-307-4541.

?

Hillsborough County has an aggressive floodplain management plan that involves a variety of mitigation activities. These activities are reviewed on an annual basis through the National Flood Insurance Program and result in residents receiving discounted flood insurance rates. Currently, the County is within the top three percent of municipalities in the nation for floodplain activities. Residents within the unincorporated county receive greater than $5 million dollars combined in discounts annually on their flood insurance rates due to these efforts.

?

For more information on the County?s flood maps, repetitive flood loss areas, flood insurance and general tips on flood safety, visit the County?s Flood Map webpages.? For information on hurricane evacuation zones and risks to storm surge, visit the County?s Emergency Information webpages.

?

For additional flood safety tips and information, visit www.ready.gov.
